Hello, my name is Norma,
I have been a member of Crossroads for two years. When I first joined the clubhouse,
it was really difficult for me to be around people - I didn't want to be here -
or anywhere else for that matter. I didn't have a good outlook on life.
I had to quit my job as a Crossing Guard - a job that I had for 18 years - and loved!
I felt it was something that I had to do.
I applied for Canada Pension -
which I was successful in getting, and I returned to the club with a positive attitude.
I didn't realize what the club could do for me until I gave it a chance.
I now work here everyday at reception - greeting people, answering the phones,
using my sense of humor to make other people laugh. Because of the club,
I feel like a new person. As of yet, I'm not ready to work out in the public but
I enjoy what I'm doing right now and I'll let the future take care of itself.
Hello, my name is Susan,
One of the best things I've ever done is to become a member of Crossroads Clubhouse,
where I have made good, long lasting friendships, and my husband to be, Stewart.
Crossroads helped give me purpose; and recognized my talents and built
upon them encouragingly & with praise and recognition.
I'm looking at publishing a book with other writers in Cape Breton.
Already I've had two poems published in the Men-tal'-i-ty Magazine.
Now, I'm looking to freelance my pieces. Already Men-tal'-i-ty wants
to publish more of my writings.
Once Crossroads opened its doors, others
opened for me as well. At Crossroads though I am refurbished.
It is a place I can be myself, a place I can belong and return to where
I'm accepted & understood.
Hello, my name is Mabel,
What has the club done for me? Where do I start? It has given me a structured day.
I feel like the Clubhouse is my second home, a second family. It gives me hope, strength,
a place to be myself.
I feel like I really belong, I feel valued in every way.
The club brings me hope every day, when I see it in the other members and staff.
Clubhouse is why I get out of bed every morning, being here makes me feel energetic
and alive.
The opportunities at Clubhouse are very real. I've been a member here for
13 years, and its given me so much!
Hi, I'm Mike
Being a member of Crossroads means having a feeling of belonging.
To speak with people who come from a similar background that can sympathize with
the difficulties mental illness can create is important.
I have benefited from the Clubhouse by meeting so many great people and having somewhere
to go. On any given day there is a variety of things you can get involved in.
I wanted to become a member so I won't feel isolated and guilty for having a mental illness.
I prefer to work in the Scrubs Unit. I can do anything from washing dishes to grocery
shopping or helping to get a meal out.
