Common Questions..
What is Crossroads?
We are a community based recovery program for individuals living with a mental illness.
Crossroads is based on the Clubhouse Model. We believe that involvement in meaningful
work and relationships can be significant in a person's recovery. Within our model,
staff and members work collaboratively on all tasks, from producing our monthly newsletter
to hiring new staff.
Why is Crossroads called a "club"?
Crossroads is part of a worldwide Clubhouse Movement that began in New York City in 1948.
At that time, individuals living with a mental illness wished to create a community
support system. A group of people started meeting together to support one another.
The best description for this affiliation was a "club". Organizations that follow
this model identify themselves as "clubs" to communicate the initial clubhouse message
of membership and belonging.
Is Crossroads the only program of its kind?
No. There are more than 300 programs found throughout the world who are registered
as a "clubhouse". There are three Clubhouses in Nova Scotia - Crossroads is the only
clubhouse on Cape Breton Island.
Can anyone come in for a tour?
Yes. Anyone can come to the Club for a tour. Call 902 567-2647 to book a time.
Where are you located?
We are located in Downtown Sydney at 40 Bentinck Street, in the lower floor of Saint
Andrew's Hall.
Can anybody join Crossroads?
Crossroads is a recovery program open to individuals (generally 19 and over)
who have been diagnosed with a mental illness (mood, thought or anxiety disorder).
How can you become a member?
An important first step in becoming a member of Crossroads is receiving a tour of our
Clubhouse. After this occurs you will receive an application for yourself and your
primary therapist to fill out. If Crossroads is an appropriate fit for you, you will
be invited to attend a two hour info session and have the opportunity to 'try us out'
for a few days.
Do you need a referral to join the club?
Yes. Once you have had a tour and completed an application form, you will need a
referral from your psychiatrist or primary therapist (an outpatient clinician in
Mental Health Services). The information gathered from your primary therapist,
along with the information you provide, will help us make a decision about membership.
What goes on at Crossroads?
A lot!!! Crossroads has a number of "work units". Within each work unit,
members and staff hold daily meetings to organize what work people can do to
contribute to the operation of the Club. There are many opportunities for
members to use and build on their talents and skills. We have a very welcoming
atmosphere at Crossroads; people are always happy to see new and returning faces
and to help members get involved in the various aspects of the Club.
How many members are at Crossroads?
There are over 200 members in total and around 40 will attend Crossroads daily.
What do people do there?

members of Crossroads participate in such things as meal planning/preparation,
telephone outreach, employment presentations, operation of our reception area,
planning for evening and weekend programs, organizing Wellness & Leisure programs,
arranging for guest speakers, visiting peers at home, etc.
The opportunities are endless.
How often do you have to attend?

including some evenings and holidays. Once you are a member,

the work of the club can help members improve their mood and refocus their energy
in a positive way.
Is Crossroads a good place to come if you are depressed or lonely?

substance use.
Is Crossroads a therapy program?
No, the role of the clubhouse staff is to get members involved and engaged in the
work-ordered day. Support occurs when members and staff work side by side to
complete the clubhouse work.
How can Crossroads help in my recovery?
Our mission is to promote a healthy, welcoming atmosphere by providing support
and acceptance. Our focus is on the removal of stigma and the creation of
opportunities to build meaningful relationships and friendships. Through a
balance of work and recreation, we strive to restore well being for persons
living with mental illness. It provides opportunities to develop and practice
life skills, participate in social activities and explore work and education
opportunities.

to attend an event at the club.
Is it a safe place?
Members and staff of Crossroads commit themselves to promoting a climate of
respect, hope, acceptance, diversity and safety. Related to this commitment,
we have established a list of 'Freedoms & Expectations'. These principals are
reviewed on a daily basis in our morning meeting, reminding each of us of how
we can maintain these values. If a situation arises that may compromise our
Freedoms and Expectations, we respond quickly and effectively to ensure
everyone's rights are respected.

experiences and each staff, like members, brings unique talents to the community.
